Description: A large, melanistic Red-eared Slider, Trachemys scripta elegans, basking on dead cattails in pHake Lake. This one, which has an 11-inch shell, is about as large as this species gets. Although you can't see most of the characteristic markings in this very dark individual, you can see a small red dot on the head if you look closely.
